<\/figure>\n\nA Concern That Began at the Tip of a Fork<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Meryem Han\u0131m recalls that she first noticed Lina\u2019s vision problem while they were eating: \u201cShe somehow could not focus on the fork. She had difficulty holding it. At first, we couldn\u2019t understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n\n Following medical examinations, it was found that Lina had a severe visual impairment. She underwent surgery when she was only eight years old. Later check-ups revealed that Yusuf also had a vision problem. Their youngest child, Kerem, was diagnosed with the same condition during a separate medical examination. <\/p>\n\n Meryem Han\u0131m recalls those days as follows: \u201cThey would move very close to the screen while watching television. Even though they sat at the very front row, they could not see the board at school. They would keep asking their friends what was written on the board. Over time, this condition made them reluctant to go to school.\u201d <\/p>\n\n For Meryem Han\u0131m, the most important change was seeing her children respond well to treatment.<\/p>\n\n \u201cSeeing the changes in my children\u2019s daily lives gave me hope,\u201d she says. \u201cIf even one of them had not responded well to treatment, that gnawing sense of sorrow would have remained. Now, seeing all of them re-engage with life makes me happy. Eid is coming up, and for the first time in years, I can feel the festive joy in my heart again.\u201d <\/p>\n\n Lina points out that many things in her life changed following treatment and after getting suitable eyeglasses. She says she used to struggle a lot while playing volleyball. <\/p>\n\n \u201cI used to think my friends were more talented than me,\u201d Lina says. \u201cIt turns out I was struggling because I couldn\u2019t see the ball clearly.\u201d Now, she feels happy that she can play with her friends without feeling any different from them. <\/p>\n\n As for Yusuf, he says that his biggest dream is to become a football player. \u201cNow I can hit the upper ninety from anywhere I want,\u201d he says, smiling. Meanwhile, the youngest child, Kerem, shares that he is no longer afraid of falling when going down the stairs. <\/p>\n\n Meryem Han\u0131m continues to face many challenges.
