Her days were planned, organized, and busy. But, political upheaval in Iraq turned her orderly life into a journey of migration…

She came to Türkiye and settled in Ankara. A new city, new streets, a whole new life… Yet Bushra accepted this change with the same determination she was used to.

She came across the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM) and the Ankara Community Center during the first few days of her new life.

She first set her mind on learning the language of the country she moved to and joined a Turkish course at the Ankara Community Center. Then came painting and sewing workshops. She learned new skills through entrepreneurship trainings and received a certificate. But perhaps, it was when she painted that she truly found herself.

Whenever she picked up a brush, the teacher who had spent years giving lectures was replaced by a whole new Bushra, one who played around with colors. Today, her paintings decorate the walls of her home.

“My paintings are everywhere in my house,” she says, smiling. “In fact, I also gave you one as a gift. They should be hung on every wall so that this course is never forgotten, so that it never ends.”

In the sewing workshop, she experienced a different kind of joy. The clothes they made during the course were delivered to those in need in the earthquake-affected region, which Bushra describes as an unforgettable experience.

She explains that after years of disciplined work behind a microscope, she felt deeply moved as she picked up a sewing needle and made clothes for children affected by the earthquake. At that very moment, she truly realized how meaningful a simple act could be for other people’s lives. For her, this was one of the most concrete expressions of solidarity.

The activities at ASAM not only helped Bushra gain new skills, but also new friendships. She formed strong bonds with her friends she met at the center. They no longer just meet at the center, but also see each other in their daily lives. During Ramadan, they invite one another for iftar and spend time together.

The Day a Dream Came True in the Stands

One of the most memorable moments for Bushra took place recently, on March 8, International Women’s Day. Through an event organized by ASAM, she had the chance to watch a women’s volleyball match from the stands for the very first time.

The atmosphere in the sports hall was utterly different. Bushra was finally at the very center of the atmosphere she had only witnessed for years on television. Holding her phone, she captured photos and videos. But the most unforgettable moment came at the end of the match. For Bushra, taking pictures with the players was an unforgettable experience.

Bushra says, “I lost the little girl within me amidst the uncertainty in Iraq. But I found her again at the stands in a volleyball match, on a canvas, in a sewing workshop. You never let go of the child within me, and I held on to her.” Today, Bushra lives under the same roof with her daughter and grandchildren. With her new life she rebuilt thousands of kilometers away from her home country, she stands as the most beautiful example of starting over…

Bushra Nemamah Amenn’s life has long been shaped by discipline and responsibility.
