Women and Girls Safe Spaces Project

With the Women and Girls Safe Spaces Project, implemented at Women and Girls Safe Spaces that have been established with the partnership of the SIHHAT Project, run by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health, counseling service is provided to asylum seekers and beneficiaries from the local community and case follow-up is conducted.

At the Women and Girls Safe Spaces that are located in Reyhanlı and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), trainings are organized on hygiene, early marriage, methods of coping with stress, development stages of children, contagious diseases, gender equality, family planning, infant care, combatting gender-based violence and children exposed to violence.

Activities in many areas, such as sexual health, reproductive health, mothers’ health counseling, pregnancy monitoring, sexual abuse identification, and access to health services, are carried out for women and girls 12 years and older at the Women and Girls Safe Spaces that provide services through teams consisting of psychologists, health educators, social workers, health mediators, interpreters, and support staff. Hygiene kits are also provided at these centers, which operate with the collaboration of the Provincial Health Directorates of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health.

As part of the Project’s expanded scope, as of 1 July 2023, needs analyses and vulnerability assessments are conducted on-site by a mobile team dedicated to earthquake response, which consists of a Social Worker, Health Educator, Interpreter, and Support Staff.

Presentations on primary healthcare services for beneficiaries are given by doctors and nurses who work at the Migrant Health Centers of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health; works are conducted in collaboration with municipalities, mukhtars, NGOs, and schools.

In the scope of the protocol signed between the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of National Education and ASAM, Turkish courses are to be organized at Public Education Centers on a regular basis along with certificate programs to assist Iraqi, Syrian, and Afghan beneficiaries to overcome the language barrier are also part of the Project.
