An acquaintance meeting was held with the first scholarship recipients of ASAM Academy on Migration Graduate Thesis Research Support Program.

The opening speeches of the meeting, which was attended by academics conducting migration-related studies as well as representatives of international organizations and NGOs operating in the field of migration, were delivered by Hacettepe University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Sema Buz, ASAM General Coordinator İbrahim Vurgun Kavlak, and ASAM Deputy General Coordinator Atty. Ayşegül Yalçın Eriş.

The recipients of the scholarship program, which is awarded to graduate and postgraduate students conducting academic studies in the field of migration, are carrying out studies on a variety of topics ranging from climate migration to working experience of asylum seeker women.

“We are aiming to support academics affected by the disaster”

ASAM General Coordinator İbrahim Vurgun Kavlak emphasized the importance of diversifying qualitative migration studies encompassing many disciplines in Türkiye, analyzing international practices, and increasing the number of academic publications that would serve as scientific references at a national level. Referring to the goals of ASAM Graduate Thesis Research Support Program, Kavlak noted that scholarship support was made available to students conducting academic research for the purposes of creating national and international references in the field of migration, supporting scientific research on migration that would be inclusive of many different disciplines and making the generation of scientific knowledge more effective.

Expressing that with the 2023 ASAM Academy on Migration Scholarship Program, they also aimed to support academics affected by the disaster, Kavlak stated that they decided to prioritize studies to be conducted in the fields of psychosocial support and humanitarian aid.

Explaining the studies undertaken by ASAM Academy on Migration, which was founded in 2019, ASAM Deputy General Coordinator Atty. Ayşegül Yalçın Eriş stated that in addition to all the trainings offered, symposiums held, reports drawn up, “Migration Talks” programs broadcasted on SGDD-ASAM YouTube Channel, Digital Library on Migration established and ASAM Academy on Migration Summer School organized so far, the Graduate Thesis Research Support Program launched was an important milestone for ASAM Academy on Migration, which sought to contribute to national and international literature. Noting that in 2023, they were aiming to present the reports published by the academy in the form of a bulletin, Eriş mentioned the collaboration they engaged in with Princeton University and said that the guide entitled “Sharing the future: Opportunities for Social Harmonization in Türkiye” would be published in May.

Eriş stated that the peer-reviewed journal, which was issued in Turkish and English, would be published very soon and that they developed a Migration Terms Index and a Migration Terminology Handbook for those who were new to the field of migration.
